Crime by County Tables
MO = Months = The number of
months the reporting agency submitted information for the designated
year. An asterisk (*) next to the number indicates an agency whose
jurisdiction lies in more than one county. For instance, data for
Columbus is found under Franklin County, Delaware County, and Fairfield
County.
CTY = County = The number assigned to the county where the
reporting agency falls. There are 88 counties in Ohio, and they are
numbered 1-88, in alphabetical order. Ex: 1=Adams, 2=Allen, ….. ,
88=Wyandot.
AGENCY NAME = The name of the law enforcement jurisdiction
submitting crime statistics through the Uniform Crime Reporting Program
(UCR), including police departments and sheriffs’ offices.
POPULATION = The population of the area covered by the reporting
agency, as determined by the FBI.
INDEX = The total number of violent and property crimes
(excluding arson) submitted by the reporting agency for the number of
months reported in that year. This number includes murders, rapes,
robberies, aggravated assaults, burglaries, larcenies, and motor vehicle
thefts.
MODIFIED INDEX = The total number of violent and property crimes
(including arson) submitted by the reporting agency for the number of
months reported in that year. This number includes murders, rapes,
robberies, aggravated assaults, burglaries, larcenies, motor vehicle
thefts, and arsons.
MURDER = The willful (non-negligent) killing of one human being
by another, as determined by police investigation. Not included in this
classification are deaths caused by negligence, suicide or accident;
justifiable homicide; and attempts/assaults to murder, which are
classified as aggravated assaults.
FORCIBLE RAPE = The carnal knowledge of a female forcibly and
against her will. Assaults or attempts to commit rape by force are
included here; however, statutory rape (without force) and other sex
offenses are not included.
AGGRAVATED ASSAULT = The unlawful attack by one person upon
another for the purpose of inflicting severe or aggravated bodily
injury. It is usually accompanied by use of a weapon or by means likely
to produce death or great bodily harm. Attempts are included in this
categorization.
ROBBERY = The taking or attempting to take anything of value from
the care, custody or control of a person or persons by force or threat
of force or violence and/or putting the victim in fear.
BURGLARY = The unlawful entry (forceful or not) of a structure to
commit a felony or theft.
LARCENY = The unlawful taking, carrying, leading or riding away
of property from the possession or constructive possession of another.
It includes crimes such as pick pocketing, shoplifting, purse snatching,
thefts from motor vehicles (including vehicle parts or accessories),
bicycle thefts, etc., in which no use of force, violence, or fraud
occurs. Motor vehicle theft is not included here as it is a
separate category.
MV THEFT = Motor Vehicle Theft = The theft or attempted theft of
a motor vehicle (including automobiles, trucks, buses, motorcycles,
motor scooters, snowmobiles, etc.). It excludes the taking of a motor
vehicle for temporary use by those persons having lawful access.
ARSON = Any willful or malicious burning or attempt to burn, with
or without intent to defraud, a house, dwelling, public building, motor
vehicle or aircraft, personal property of another, etc. Only fires
determined through investigation are arson.
